ONI IN/ONI OUT is a two-movement piece composed of real-time field recordings of my living space while some of my favourite songs by other artists are played in slow motion through speakers. These tracks (six in total) are layered on top of each other to create a distorted, ever-shifting atmosphere. ONI IN is a fully reversed version of ONI OUT, creating a palindrome-like structure.
It was New Year’s Eve 2018, and my mother decided to open the front door and shout “oni out!” to welcome in the new year and cast out bad luck (from the Japanese tradition of yelling “oni wa soto” (demons go out) on Setsubun, actually celebrated in early February). Being Japanese Canadian, sometimes these things get confused due to the loss of culture and language. However, instead of “oni out!” she yelled “oni in!” I still find it to be a funny story even though I got really sick for the rest of the year almost immediately afterwards.
