Autocatharsis (2025)

On March 1, 2025, I was part of Jordan King’s “On View” series at FADO Performance Art Centre. The performance took place in 401 Richmond St West on the fourth floor, featuring the debut of my solo classical guitar piece “Autocatharsis,” performed three times over the course of four hours.

Autocatharsis (2025) is a four-movement structured improvisation for solo classical guitar. The score indicates the musical fragments that determine the content of each movement. The order and repetition of these core ideas is left to the interpretation of the performer.

Historically, the term “autocatharsis” was used in a psychoanalytic context and referred to the practice of reflective writing as a therapeutic process. Within this creative work, it is interpreted as a repetitive, performed action that reveals something. In this case, the musical content is dictated, but the order and treatment is varied and left to intuition and personal taste. Here, the core musical ideas are a language through which decisions can be made — decisions that reveal something about the desired treatment of musical form.
